He loves me… he loves me not…? Why can’t she just get over things more easily? I have a right to be jealous if my ex is “hanging out” with my best friend, right?
High school dating and relationships can be complicated and are always confusing. From the simple act of making a good first impression, to going on a first date, to wondering if they’re into you at all, or even just figuring out what to do if it all leads up to meeting their parents, it is down right exhausting being a teen today.
So for my blog, I will attempt to give a girl’s and a guy’s perspective on important topics involved in this thing called love. Throughout this column each month, I will give guy’s ideas on things like: how to ask a girl to prom, how to get her phone number, and how to read her encoded signals which I guarantee aren’t ever easy to read.
And for you girls out there, I’ll help you with cute date ideas, ways you can support and encourage your man, and I will even offer some advice on what to wear to meet the parents. All that, and a whole lot more.
—————————————————————--
To start, let’s take a look at the most basic step of all: dating. To help make this complicated process a little easier, I’m going to give you the basic definitions of dating and walk you all through the entire process.
Granted, you may know the steps that lead into dating, or I might just now be introducing these concepts to you, or you may be out of high school and have completely no idea as to what the difference between “talking” and “dating” is. Well whichever one you are, hopefully I can help.
To begin, let’s start from the beginning: Hanging Out.
“Hanging out” is where you and your friends can either be hanging out in a group or it could be just two people who are kind of interested in each other.
So, Guys, how do you see if that girl is just going to be a friend or is going to something more? For starters, you really have to get her number. This may seem intimidating, but how else can you get to know her better? Some ideas to get her number are to casually bring it up in the conversation or just ask a friend for it.
Keep in mind that for both guys and girls, texting is key to a potential relationship. With a text, you can think out what you want to say, and you can always stall just a little if you ever need to. When you have a conversation over the phone or in person, there needs to be effort put forth to keep the conversation going. No effort equals nothing between the two of you. So start slow, and know that texting can be your friend here.
What’s important to note in this stage is that the guy or girl you are interested in IS ALLOWED to hang out with other people without being restricted to hanging out with just you. This stage is not as serious as the others. You are just starting to find out more about each other, so no worries if they are doing the same with other people. It’s all part of the game. However, don’t over look this stage. It is where all modern-day relationships start.
Next, is “Talking”:
After you’ve been hanging out for good couple of weeks (will vary for each couple), it becomes time to DTR: Define The Relationship.
Do not assume that you are “talking” just because one of you is sending encouraging signals to the other. They may just be trying to figure out if they’re into you or not. The ‘”talking stage” needs to be discussed if, and only if, you can see this guy or girl as a serious candidate for your boyfriend or girlfriend.
And, I hate to break it to you, but this is going to be awkward and can be scary when you make the decision to move to this point. Sorry. That’s just the way it goes…
“What if he doesn’t like me?” “What if she’s into someone else?” What if what if what if…
The questions are going to be endless, but you need to be on the same page with each other for it to work. If you guys agree that you’re in the “talking stage,” this means that your guy or girl is off limits to others. Basically, you’re dating without the title.
At this point, you go out on dates like other couple; but at this point, the whole “who’s going to pay for this $15 burger plate” is truly up to the discretion of the guy. He is not required to pay, but is almost always expected to.
*I’ll give you a little hint guys: pay for the girl. It shows your interested and dedicated.*
Some couples may “talk” for a couple of months and then break it off if they see that they weren’t good as a couple. Hopefully, you realize you are better off friends. However, other couples at this point move onto “dating.” “Talking” can last two weeks or up to two months; it just depends on the couple.
“Dating”: Finally we reached the last stage.
You made it! This is where you introduce your “official” boyfriend or girlfriend to your parents (and now the guy is required to pay for all the dates–lucky you!).
Meeting the parents is a huge deal. Girls, don’t wear skimpy dressed or low V-neck shirts. And guys, have a good belt that will hold your pants up above the rear. Your attire reflects who you are, and I’m sure the father of your girlfriend is not interested in what kind of underwear you own.
Also, one of the major rules for dating is this… DON’T CHEAT on each other. There is no point in dating someone if you’re going to cheat. Besides, if you wanted to play the field, you should have done that months ago before you both decided to commit to each other.

Well, that’s it. Dating 101 for the millennial teen. In upcoming blogs, we’ll talk about how dating has changed from generation to generation. And then we’ll continue to look at trends, and etiquette, and even how we fight. So until next time, good luck out there!
